Barcelona have issues an ultimatum to Ousmane Dembele over his contract situation, according to reports. It’s one Liverpool should look at.
This comes from ESPN. They claim Barcelona have told Ousmane Dembele to agree a new contract or leave the club this summer.
His current deal expires in a year and they don’t want to risk losing him for free. He cost nearly £140m, after all.
Memphis Depay is set to join Barcelona, too, and they believe the Dutchman can provide a ready-made replacement. It appears Dembele really could be up for sale, then.
And with that, Liverpool have an opportunity.
Ousmane Dembele receives contract ultimatum
Dembele is undoubtedly a supremely talented footballer. At his best, he could play for anyone.
Injuries really interrupted his career with Barcelona, however. They left him inconsistent in his first season, though he recovered in his second.
That third campaign, though – 2019/20 – was a disaster. Dembele appeared just nine times after a series of problems.
But once again, he rebounded over the next campaign. Dembele played 44 times over the season just gone, performing well enough to get back into the France team after a three-year absence.
So the injury concerns aren’t clear-cut. Dembele is perfectly capable of playing a full season and playing well. And that’s why we think Liverpool should have a look.
We’ve written before about Dembele’s potential at Liverpool. He’s rapid, capable of playing on both flanks, and young enough that he could explode into a top player.
We’d back Liverpool to develop him better than Barcelona, too. They’ve been a bit of a mess over the last few years, after all, and are hardly the right environment for a young player to progress.
Reports out of Spain previously claimed that Jurgen Klopp asked for Dembele a year ago. Well, here’s his big chance. Get involved, stop him signing that contract, and bring him in for a discount price.
Because if Klopp and co. get their hands on Dembele, we think there’s an elite player waiting.
