The Reds have been without their first choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker since the opening day of the season. The world’s best shot stopper limped off against Norwich with a calf injury and has been unavailable since. Jürgen Klopp indicated that Alisson is available for the return of Brendan Rodgers to Anfield. Midweek, Liverpool were without their imperious centre half Joel Matip due to an injury that Klopp described as not too serious. However, it has transpired that the Joel Matip injury is serious enough to sideline him for Leicester’s visit.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, broadcast live on the club’s YouTube channel, Jürgen Klopp told the press “Joel Matip looks good but is not ready for tomorrow”. This will be a blow to Liverpool fans that felt Joe Gomez looked shaky against Red Bull Salzburg. The England international has struggled for a place in the side since his return from a leg break sustained against Burnley last summer.

Prior to his prolonged injury layoff, Joe Gomez had been undroppable from the Liverpool side. He forged an impassable partnership with Virgil van Dijk during the start of the 2018/19 season before Matip stepped into his shoes. From January onwards the Cameroonian defender was a revelation at the back, forging his own partnership with Big Virg and playing a pivotal role in a Champions League triumph in the process.

With Gomez likely to start alongside Van Dijk again today, Kopites will be hoping that they can recover the understanding that made them the League’s most miserly partnership until the New Year. If Gomez can return to form, the Matip injury may not be a disaster after all.
