Wednesday night saw Red Bull Salzburg visit Anfield. The Austrians put in a valiant display to recover parity in the game after going 3 goals down in side the first 36 minutes. Many Liverpool fans were quick to apportion blame to Joe Gomez for the 3 goal collapse, the Twitter reaction to his display was divided. The England international returned to the side due to an injury to Joel Matip. The Cameroonian defender was ruled out of the Champions League game midweek and isn’t fit enough to face Leicester today. Jürgen Klopp used his pre-match press conference to defend Joe Gomez’ performance.

The German’s media briefing was broadcast live on the club’s official YouTube channel. Jürgen told the gathered press, “It would be unfair to make Joe responsible for any of the goals we conceded”. Gomez appeared to be at fault for the Austrian’s second goal. The England international charged out of defence and fouled one of the opposition, the free kick was taken quickly and Salzburg capitalised with JoGo out of position.

Jürgen explained his defence of Gomez saying, “Players who haven’t played together a while need time to get used to each other again. That’s normal,” this is a fair assessment from Klopp. The English centre half hasn’t held down a regular place in the defence since his leg break and will inevitably have some rustiness to shake off. We shouldn’t forget the impressive form that Gomez was in before his injury, it is only a matter of time before he returns to this form.
