Fans are loving Marco Asensio’s comments on an improbable move to Liverpool after it was sensationally claimed he could make a £158m move to Anfield.

Everybody – and I mean everybody – loves a bit of the summer transfer window. We all complain about it from time to time but there is no denying the thrill when reading a story that is linking your club to an absolute world beater.

In the past few years, the Reds have been linked with Gonzalo Higuain before his move to Juventus, Marco Reus just about every transfer window and Mats Hummels a fair few times too.

This summer, Ousmane Dembele has been tipped for a move to Merseyside and most recently, Marco Asensio has been linked with a sensational £158million move to Liverpool.

On Saturday, Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo claimed that the Reds are ready to splash the cash on Asensio, with a fee of £158m being touted.

The player’s agent even came out and said: “He has an extraordinary future. You can imagine that [the offers] come from England because they can afford it without any problems.

“They could even raise it.”

And now supporters on Twitter are refusing to get disappointed by quotes from Marco Asensio himself after the young forward was asked about a move to Anfield.

When asked about the Reds’ interest, Asensio replied: “When the World Cup is over, we’ll talk about that sort of thing, now I’m focused on selection [for Spain].

“I’m glad Julen has signed up for Real Madrid, after the World Cup we’ll talk things over with him.”

While that is clearly a very diplomatic response to being linked with a club and quite non-committal, fans on social media have let their imaginations run wild – as they should during the summer!

Of course, it is incredibly unlikely that Liverpool would sign a player with a €700 million release clause, but I’m all for letting logic and reason fall by the wayside and getting caught up in the hysteria of the transfer window.

Otherwise, it’s too easy to get absolutely maddened by every news story that might get published before the start of the season.
