As frustration begins to take hold of Liverpool supporters with a lack of summer movement in the transfer market, they could at least focus back on matters on the pitch on Saturday.
It has been a big build-up to Andoni Iraola‘s first match in charge, and while Reds fans may have headed into the match feeling slightly glum, they should have ended it massively encouraged.
The signs that Liverpool will be a different beast under Iraola were clear right through the 4-2 win over Sunderland, and Black Cats’ defender Dan Ballard spoke out after the match to confirm that playing against the Reds is already completely different to what he experienced with Arne Slot‘s team last season.

Ballard explains the differences between Iraola and Slot
Often the best insight in football comes from the opposition who have just faced you. They can arguably give the best view of what you did well and what you need to work on.
And judging by an interview post-game, Ballard was clearly impressed with Liverpool, highlighting some major differences between the Reds of Iraola and Slot.
“I think there was a lot of differences,” said the centre-back. “The new gaffer [Iraola] sets the team up in the press very different and he’s very intense the way he wants his teams to play, so we did a lot of work looking at his Bournemouth team last year.
“They’re very aggressive in the press, they play very vertically and they go straight for goal, which is a little bit different to Slot’s team [which was] a little bit more possession-based.

“They gave us a little bit more time on the ball last year, which we were quite surprised by playing Liverpool, knowing them throughout the years!”
Given this is only matchday one of pre-season, those are hugely encouraging words from Ballard, and should give every Liverpool fan hope that things will turn for the better in 2026/27.
More work is needed in the market, but that will surely come eventually. In the meantime, Iraola’s ideas are clearly already getting through, and that is bad news for the rest of the Premier League.
