By all accounts, Arne Slot was not expecting to be free to take on a new job this summer, having been ready to put things right at Liverpool.
As a result, fans could not blame the Dutchman for taking some time out following his sacking to assess the job market and see what is out there for him.
Slot was linked with AC Milan almost immediately following his Liverpool exit, but the Italian club have since appointed Ruben Amorim. With no top clubs left to join, the 47-year-old may have been ready to bide his time and wait for the right opportunity.

However, that may have now unexpectedly come up, after Ronald Koeman left his position with the Netherlands following a disappointing World Cup. Slot has been put in the frame, and according to former Eredivisie manager Robert Maaskant, the former Liverpool boss is expected to take the reins.
Slot likely to take Netherlands job
With Jurgen Klopp set to join Germany, there is a chance that Slot and Klopp could face off during their first match in their respective new jobs.
Speaking to Sportnieuws this week, Maaskant has suggested that that will be the case. After confirming that he knows Slot well, the 57-year-old was asked whether he thought his friend would take the Netherlands job.
“I think so. I think it is going to happen,” he said. “I think if he is asked, well, one and one equals two, right?”

“It is of course a fairly logical choice that you end up with a coach who has performed at the very highest level, who has done well at all clubs in the Netherlands and is available.
“And I think Slot is someone who feels flattered by that, and that he would then take on that challenge. That is what I expect.”
There will be other managers in the running too, but, as Maaskant says, the timing is perfect for the KNVB to snare Slot.
Though things ended under a cloud for him at Liverpool, most fans will wish him well in his new venture, and with the Netherlands already containing three key Reds players, it will give them another reason to root for the Oranje.
