Florian Wirtz worries Liverpool fans following Germany’s World Cup win over Ivory Coast

Florian Wirtz has not yet had the impact expected of him either with Liverpool, or with Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Though he has struggled to get going since joining the Reds in 2025, Wirtz has still turned up for his country on occasion, with hopes that he could be the Germans’ main man in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Things started well for the 23-year-old, as he registered an assist in the opening minutes against Curacao, but he did not have a hand in any of Germany’s subsequent six goals, and also failed to make any kind of impact during Saturday’s 2-1 win over Ivory Coast.

Liverpool fans have so far stood by Wirtz, and tuned in hoping to see him deliver a top performance on the world stage. But after the Reds’ No. 7 turned in another underwhelming showing, supporters on Rousing The Kop‘s social media channels aired their dissatisfaction with the £116m man.

Liverpool fans want more from Wirtz

As with Liverpool, Wirtz does have other good players around him to help drag the team to results. Nevertheless, with such a big price-tag on his head, he should be looking a cut above most players.

Sadly, this was not the case at Liverpool last season, and according to Reds fans who watched him against Ivory Coast, it is looking like being the same story at the World Cup.

“Just the usual, average,” said one supporter when asked to comment on his display on RTK‘s X account. “He was consistently bullied. Average,” said another.

“116 million and gets bullied like that is embarrassing,” one more fan agreed.

“About the same as his Liverpool performances,” commented another. “Underwhelming for 115m. It all looks tidy but never dominates or influences the game enough.”

“He was awful as usual. £116m for a player that can’t even shoot,” someone else fumed.

Fans on RTK’s Facebook page were also left frustrated. Hope that Wirtz would show his true self while away from Liverpool are quickly beginning to fade.

How does Andoni Iraola get the Netherlands version of Cody Gakpo for Liverpool?

This is not the same player 😭

“Not impressive, someone said. “Talent alone is not enough. He must be a fighter, a die hard and a warrior.”

“Not impressive, he can do better,” another added. “Reminded me of Wirtz of last season.”

“He was not that good,” one more supporter agreed. “A performance you’d expect from a 40m player. Gakpo who has been criticized to hell and back did better in the second game week.”

Although there were others who wanted to fight Wirtz’s corner, claiming that he was tidy enough and that you cannot expect miracles from him every game, the overriding feeling is that Liverpool fans are starting to grow worried that the former Bayer Leverkusen man is simply not going to get any better.
