Likelihood of Liverpool making move for Lutsharel Geertruida this summer explained

Lutsharel Geertruida has been on Liverpool’s radar for a while now, and a move this summer cannot be ruled out.

Geertruida was the Reds’ top target to strengthen at right-back during the 2026 winter transfer window when Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong both picked up injuries.

Reports at the back end of May then suggested the right-back was still of interest to Liverpool, but Tottenham Hotspur were also following the player.

Now, it’s thought a move for Geertruida could still be on the cards, but he is not currently high on the Merseyside outfit’s agenda.

Lutsharel Geertruida is not high on Liverpool’s transfer agenda

Speaking to Anfield Index, journalist David Lynch provided an update on the Reds’ interest.

Lynch suggested that the departure of Arne Slot may have had an impact on a possible move, but did add that a move can’t be ruled out.

He said: “I guess no contact up to now it maybe tells you something but you know they will be assessing multiple options.

“So I wouldn’t like to sort of say there’s absolutely no chance but maybe that was a little bit more of a kind of an Arne Slot thing. He knew the player trusted him, knew what he’d get out of him. And yeah, I think he did fairly well on loan last season. So I think you know, the knowing he knew the league as well would have been helpful.

“But yeah, I wouldn’t say I’d rule him out just yet. But it doesn’t seem like it’s one that’s really, really high on the agenda.”

Geertruida spent last season on loan in the Premier League with Sunderland, who did have the option to make his move permanent this summer.

The North East outfit are yet to take up said option, though, meaning clubs like Liverpool and Tottenham could still do a deal.

The 25-year-old made 30 appearances while on Sunderland’s books last term, but did not score or assist.

That is perhaps not a great sign for Liverpool, who clearly missed the goal contributions of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson last season.
