Liverpool’s transfer window has kicked into gear with just over 24 hours to the deadline.
True to their word, the Reds did no significant business in January.
It’s February now, though, and it looks like the hunt for a defensive addition has kicked into gear.
Liverpool have begun talks with Lutsharel Geertruida, hoping to reunite Arne Slot with his former Feyenoord captain — a versatile defender who has impressed on loan at Sunderland.
How would you feel if Liverpool sign Lutsharel Geertruida?
Talks are underway!
Negotiations are progressing, and Liverpool’s chances of getting this one over the line have now been revealed.
How likely Lutsharel Geertruida is to join Liverpool – David Ornstein
The transfer game is an unpredictable one.
Especially as the deadline approaches, it’s impossible to know what bumps in the road may arise. Just look at Marc Guehi’s failed Liverpool move last summer.
But Sunderland are happy to let Geertruida leave, provided they can replace him by 7pm on Monday.

With that in mind, David Ornstein has fairly high hopes of the Reds getting that much-needed addition at the back.
He writes on X: “Geertruida move needs RB Leipzig to break Sunderland loan & Liverpool to strike deal with both. #SAFC want replacement (agreement close) + compensation. Chances rated ~75%.”
Liverpool fans will be wary of getting too excited. There have been plenty of recent deals that looked destined to happen that didn’t go through. If it’s not Geertruida, though, they have other options.
Liverpool not all-in on Geertruida
This Geertruida story has been moving fast since breakfast-time on Sunday.
When sharing the new developments, David Lynch said Liverpool have other options than Geertruida, but he never mentioned who they exactly were.
Ornstein has a name in mind, though. He says Denzel Dumfries is still an option, with Curtis Jones potentially intertwined in that deal.
How would you react if Curtis Jones leaves for Inter Milan?
And how much is he really worth?
Dumfries is a fantastic player, and probably of a higher level than his fellow Dutchman Geertruida.
That being said, he doesn’t quite offer the same versatility. Geertruida can play all across the defence and at the base of the midfield.
It just depends whether FSG are looking to strengthen considerably at right-back or strengthen the squad across the board.
We’re sure to find that out in the next 24 hours.
