Liverpool’s stance on signing a new right-back as Joe Gomez draws interest from three clubs

Liverpool’s right-back position has been a problem ever since Trent Alexander-Arnold decided to leave for Real Madrid.

Jeremie Frimpong was signed as the direct replacement, but as 2025/26 showed, the Dutchman is more suited to playing in an advanced role.

Conor Bradley also picked up a long-term injury, seeing Arne Slot often playing central midfielders out of position in the backline. But Liverpool are now planning to strengthen their right-back department in the summer ahead of a potential Joe Gomez exit.

You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?

Liverpool want to sign a new right-back

It was reported earlier in the season that Gomez is expected to leave before the 2026/27 season gets underway.

The versatile defender is out of contract next year, so a summer sale would make the most sense.

Now, the Daily Mail have said that all of AC Milan, Aston Villa and Besiktas are looking at the Englishman.

Losing Gomez, who has been in and out of the team due to injury issues, would further weaken the right-hand side of Slot’s defence.

But the report also adds that Liverpool ‘are actively looking for a right-back option’ this summer.

On that front, a former transfer target is once again being linked ahead of the window opening up next month.

Liverpool still interested in Lutsharel Geertruida

Amid injuries to Bradley and Frimpong over the winter, Lutsharel Geertruida was Liverpool’s top target to strengthen at right-back in January.

However, the Dutchman ended up staying at Sunderland, who have the option to purchase him from RB Leipzig now 2025/26 is over.

But as journalist Sebastien Vidal has now said, the North East outfit are yet to take up that option, while Liverpool and Tottenham are looking at the full-back.

He stated: “Lutsharel Geertruida could quickly leave Sunderland after his strong season in the Premier League.

“Liverpool and Tottenham are closely following the Dutch defender, while the Black Cats have still not exercised their buy option with RB Leipzig.”
