Liverpool’s woeful 2025/26 season has reached its conclusion, and Arne Slot risks sending fans into the summer even more frustrated after his post-Brentford comments.
It was a typically flat and uninspired performance. Liverpool failed to beat Brentford and could not give Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson the send-off they deserved.
There was a sad inevitability about it all. Liverpool have lacked rhythm, control and conviction for most of the campaign, and that did not suddenly change on the final day. After the match, Slot was asked for one word to describe the season.
His answer was as unsatisfactory as it was predictable.

Arne Slot blames injuries for Liverpool’s dismal season
There is a concerning trend with Slot in these interviews.
The Dutchman rarely seems willing to accept much public accountability for Liverpool’s struggles, and he fell back on a familiar excuse in his final media appearance of the season.
As The Athletic’s Gregg Evans reports (via X), Slot said: “If you ask me one word to describe this season I would say ‘injury’.”
There is no denying Liverpool have been hit hard on that front.
Alexander Isak, Alisson Becker, Hugo Ekitike, Salah, Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley have all missed significant time this season. No team can deal with that level of disruption without feeling the effects.
But that cannot be the whole explanation.
In pinning so much on injuries, Slot is avoiding the vast number of other factors that have contributed to Liverpool’s decline. That starts with how he has set the team up.
There has been a lack of intensity, a dearth of creativity and far too many defensive weaknesses that cannot simply be explained away by an injury list. Liverpool have too often looked passive without the ball and predictable with it.
That is why Slot’s one-word summary will frustrate fans. Injuries have been a factor, but they are not the first thing that springs to mind when looking back on this campaign.

If Slot is going to take Liverpool forward, he needs to stop sounding like he is making excuses. Whatever reasons he has in his head, supporters are tired of hearing them. They want accountability, solutions and a team that looks ready to fight again next season.
