Jeremie Frimpong makes Florian Wirtz promise to Liverpool fans after difficult debut season

Florian Wirtz is yet to reach the heights his £116m price-tag suggested he could at Liverpool.

After arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in the 2025 summer transfer window, Wirtz came in for heavy criticism amid his lack of goal contributions.

He hit a brief purple patch over the winter before declining again in the last couple of months. But long-time teammate Jeremie Frimpong still thinks there is a lot more to come from the German.

Jeremie Frimpong says Florian Wirtz will improve at Liverpool

Frimpong and Wirtz both arrived at Anfield last summer, signing from Leverkusen.

In Germany, the pair won the Bundesliga title under former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.

Wirtz scored 57 and assisted 65 for his former club and was key to their title success, and in an interview this week, Frimpong has claimed the 23-year-old can achieve similar heights at Anfield.

Speaking on The Anfield Wrap’s YouTube channel, he said: “He’s [Wirtz] an amazing player, you know, he wins you titles.

“So yes, there’s a lot more coming from Flo, 100%. And there’s a lot more you will see.”

Arne Slot’s prediction for Florian Wirtz

Arne Slot has been similarly positive about Wirtz improving more at Liverpool.

Speaking at the beginning of May, the Dutchman said he is sure the attacking midfielder will get better.

He stated: “I don’t only hope that, I am 100% sure he will turn up [against top six teams]. We play three of those now so there are chances but it so clear the development in 10 months, it is clear and obvious. 93 mins vs Crystal Palace, wins a throw-in and then hits it in the top corner.

“I was not convinced he could do that 8 months ago. His improvement, he was already an elite player, has been for me obvious. It will only continue. He is 23 on Sunday. That makes sense, every player is at his best at 25/26, he can only become better. That is the beauty of the signings we made.”

But as Liverpool push to finally secure a top-five place in the Premier League, they have been left without Wirtz in the last week.

The German missed the Chelsea draw, and Slot is yet to confirm if he can feature against Aston Villa on Friday.

Speaking post-Chelsea, he said: “Mo is close to returning, Ali is close to returning. With Flo we have to wait and see how he’s recovering after what he has.”
