Liverpool could now sign a second midfielder with Adam Wharton to replace Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool’s midfield task for the summer could become even larger if Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones leave, but FSG appear to have a contingency plan.

In terms of serious links to midfielders in recent weeks, Liverpool’s pursuit of Adam Wharton has dominated the headlines. An Anfield move for the Crystal Palace midfielder does feel like it could be on the cards.

But Liverpool are looking at several options beyond Wharton, and if Mac Allister leaves, one of Lamine Camara or Mamadou Sangare could yet arrive alongside the England international.

Who should advance into the semi-final as Liverpool’s Player of the Season?

Lamine Camara or Mamadou Sangare could join Liverpool with Adam Wharton

Camara and Sangare are two Liverpool targets currently making a real impression in Ligue 1.

22-year-old Camara has developed into an energetic, technically sharp midfielder at Monaco, while 23-year-old Sangare has caught the eye at Lens as a combative ball-winner who can cover ground and help his team play forward.

They are not identical players, but the broad appeal is obvious. Both offer tremendous upside, the right age profile, and the kind of midfield athleticism Liverpool have lacked completely this season.

Speaking to Anfield Index, David Lynch outlined Liverpool’s interest in both players.

He said: “You kind of group those two together. I don’t watch the French league very frequently, but I hear some similarities between them in terms of combative midfielders who get about the pitch a little bit.

“I would imagine with those two it’s one or the other. Definite interest, they’ve watched both of them, but how far it goes is really tough to call at the moment. I do expect them to sign a midfielder, I would almost say 10 out of 10 for that that it will be one of the bits of business done.”

The important thing to note with Liverpool’s midfield recruitment is that it remains a fluid situation.

The profiles they need, the fees they can afford to allocate and the number of signings required will all depend on who stays and who goes.

On that topic, Lynch added: “I think Jones will go, I expect that that will happen, but if Mac Allister goes as well, it really opens up possibilities for them.

“If both go, you will probably see Adam Wharton come in and one other, which will probably be one of these two lads, or someone of similar profile.”

You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?

Wharton may be FSG’s headline midfield target, but he should not be the only one. Jones going would create one vacancy. Mac Allister leaving Liverpool would create a much bigger problem.

In that scenario, Wharton plus one of Camara or Sangare suddenly becomes a logical plan. Liverpool need the right balance, and the market will now dictate how ambitious they have to be.
