Liverpool have two standout Adam Wharton alternatives emerging in the French Ligue 1

As Liverpool search for a new midfield addition this summer, Adam Wharton may not end up arriving after all.

Rumours have ramped up in the past week or so that Wharton is a dream signing for the Reds, and with doubt shrouding the futures of Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister, a move was starting to feel inevitable.

However, there are question marks over whether the Crystal Palace star is the right profile for Liverpool, and according to journalist David Lynch, the Reds have two other options emerging in Ligue 1: Monaco’s Lamine Camara and Mamadou Sangare of Lens.

Liverpool tracking Camara and Sangare as well as Wharton

In many ways, a move for Wharton would make a lot of sense for Liverpool this summer.

Nevertheless, there are concerns that Arne Slot needs more of a physical profile to add to what he already has, with the England international’s arrival not necessarily fixing that issue.

Liverpool have been crying out for a more dominant, ball-winning midfielder at times this season, and, as Lynch writes on his Substack, that could be why Camara and Sangare are both now coming onto the radar.

“Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is strongly admired by recruitment staff, who have been in close contact with the midfielder’s representatives since his breakthrough at Blackburn Rovers,” says the reporter.

“Lamine Camara of Monaco and RC Lens’ Mamadou Sangare are also among the emerging talents to have been watched closely.

“But any additions depend much on exactly who departs and so it is tricky to predict whether this summer’s midfield shake-up will go as far as it probably should.”

Camara, 22, and Sangare, 23, are more natural defensive midfielders than Wharton, and would represent a clear shift towards Liverpool playing with a more defined number six.

With Jones and Mac Allister potentially departing, there is perhaps space for either Camara or Sangare to arrive alongside as opposed to instead of Wharton.
