Liverpool could sign Yan Diomande and then use him in an unexpected position

Liverpool continue to be mooted to make a move for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande this summer.

Diomande could cost £87m, with RB Leipzig seemingly not that keen to sell one of their top-performing stars.

Should he sign, it would make sense for the natural right-winger to come in as Mohamed Salah’s replacement, but a possible switch to the left flank has now been discussed.

Liverpool could use Yan Diomande on the left

So far this season, Cody Gakpo has largely operated as Arne Slot’s main left-winger, but has struggled.

Fans don’t love Gakpo, but outside of the Dutchman, teenage star Rio Ngumoha, who Slot does not like to start very often, is the only natural option.

In turn, Liverpool signing another left winger this summer would make sense, and it is not surprising that Bradley Barcola is being linked again.

However, when speaking on the United Stand’s YouTube channel this week, journalist Ben Jacobs floated the idea that Diomande could potentially fill that role.

He said: “Yan Diomande, Liverpool are going to go quite big there. And there is a sort of point of difference here because Diomande started on the left. He moved over to the right and Liverpool look at him as two-sided.

“So it could be Diomande as your Salah replacement, but they still go for a left-sided player to replace Luis Diaz, or it could be Diomande gets moved back to the left if he moves to Anfield.

“And then they talk about, do they need an out-and-out Mo Salah replacement in addition, or are they going to go for a creative-minded, versatile attacker? Manchester United obviously have more of a concern about the left-hand side. So were they to succeed with Diomande, he would likely revert back to the left.”

If that were to be the case, then Liverpool would still need to bring in another right-sided winger to replace Salah.

Jarrod Bowen has been mooted as an option for the Reds, though West Ham United are not thought to be keen on a sale.

Elsewhere, there are multiple other players linked to replace Salah, and it will be interesting to see who Richard Hughes and Co. decide is the ideal man to do so.
