Liverpool are among the sides to have shown interest in Sandro Tonali, and Newcastle are now looking to replace the Italian with Curtis Jones.

The Reds were given a boost regarding the midfielder last week when it was reported that Tonali won’t return to Serie A in 2026, despite previous suggestions that could be on the cards.

Now, an insight into how Newcastle plan to replace the Italian has been shared, and it involves Curtis Jones.

You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?

Newcastle United could replace Sandro Tonali with Curtis Jones

Jones’ future at Anfield has been called into question this season amid a lack of regular starts under Arne Slot.

He has begun to feature more in recent matches, but has been used out of position at right-back.

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked to Jones this season, while it is now claimed Newcastle could look at the Englishman as a replacement for Tonali.

Taking to X/Twitter, journalist Sebastien Vidal stated: “In case of Tonali’s departure, Newcastle already has a clear plan: go on the offensive for Curtis Jones.

“The profile is highly appealing internally: volume of play, technical quality, experience with titles, and could perfectly fit into the project. Liverpool might open the door this summer.”

Liverpool told why Curtis Jones should stay

Jones’ form, especially when used in his natural central midfield position this season, has been up and down.

Liverpool want to sign a new midfielder in the summer as well, which could create more competition for the player.

However, Jermaine Pennant has explained why Jones should be kept at Anfield this summer.

He said: “We should keep him just for his versatility, it’s great. You can put him anywhere in the midfield or at right back. You need that.

“He’s a local lad, he knows and loves the club and he can help a lot of the players understand certain things as well.

“Ultimately, the last few games, he’s been phenomenal – one of the top performers.

“So, we should offer him a contract because this squad is dwindling. There are a lot of key players leaving and you need to keep the core. He’s a local lad and we have already lost Trent [Alexander-Arnold].

“Offer him a contract, and ultimately, it’s up to him if he wants to go somewhere where he can play week in, week out, but all the club can do is offer.”
