Argentine media have just told Liverpool which midfielder could revive Alexis Mac Allister

Alexis Mac Allister has been one of the players guilty of dropping his standards considerably at Liverpool this season.

One of their best performers during last season’s Premier League title win, the Argentine has been miles off it for much of his third campaign at Anfield.

His poor form has led to a belief that Mac Allister could be sold this summer, with Real Madrid reportedly showing an interest in the Liverpool No. 10. However, after he showed a ‘great connection’ with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez during Argentina’s win over Mauritania on Friday, perhaps all he needs is a change of partner.

Mac Allister enjoying Enzo Fernandez partnership

Before he joined Chelsea in a whopping £107m deal in January 2023, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Fernandez.

Since then, after a slow start at Stamford Bridge, the 25-year-old has started to live up to his price-tag and now looks like one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

On Friday, he partnered Mac Allister in the Argentine midfield, with TyC Sports claiming that the Liverpool man displayed a ‘great connection’ with Fernandez.

With Mac Allister playing in a deeper role and controlling the team’s tempo, Chelsea’s No. 5 was named as Argentina’s star performer. TyC Sports claim ‘if Alexis plays well, Enzo usually follows suit’, declaring the duo as being absolutely key to the World Champions.

As Liverpool search for solutions to their midfield issues this summer, they would do well to take note of Mac Allister’s revival alongside Fernandez.

Although he may seem like an unattainable signing from Chelsea, the World Cup winner has been suggesting that he could be ready to move on this summer. Liverpool should start to position themselves in order to give Mac Allister the best chance of returning to his previous form.

Fernandez could be available this summer

As journalist Ben Jacobs reported for TalkSPORT earlier in March, Fernandez is ‘open’ to moving on from his current club at the end of the season.

“Enzo Fernandez is open to leaving Chelsea, it’s as simple as that,” Jacobs said. “But are Chelsea open to selling Enzo Fernandez? Not at the moment, but there’s a long way to go until the summer.”

It is stated that Real Madrid would be the club of preference for the Argentina international, but if Liverpool come forward to offer him a stay in the Premier League alongside his countryman, perhaps that may be of interest.

They certainly seem to get the best out of each other, with Mac Allister sitting a little deeper and Fernandez pushing on in a box-to-box role. As Liverpool ponder what to do in a post-Mohamed Salah world, adding more cut and thrust to their midfield sounds like a good idea.

Fernandez may not seem like the most obvious candidate to do that, but if Liverpool want to get more out of Mac Allister, he might be the best hope they’ve got.
