Benfica are not aware of any pre-agreement surrounding Enzo Fernandez‘s potential move to Liverpool.

There have been reports this week that Fernandez to Liverpool is almost a done-deal. However, according to 90min, that certainly isn’t the case.

They claim that sources have informed them that Benfica are ‘unaware’ of any such agreement. The sources are also said to insist that such talk is ‘premature.’

However, 90min do confirm that the interest is very much there from Liverpool. They claim that this interest has also led to initial contact being made with Fernandez’s representatives. But that’s reportedly as far as things have gone.

Should the Reds want to bring the World Cup finalist to Anfield, it’s claimed that they’ll have to pay his full release clause. This reportedly stands at around £103m.

Liverpool aren’t the only interested party, though. As heavily reported elsewhere, 90min claim that Real Madrid are ‘admirers of Fernandez’s talent.’ Meanwhile, we also see the first mention of Barcelona as being in the running.

Fernandez hunt far from over for Liverpool

Things had looked to be starting to move quickly surrounding Enzo’s move to Anfield. But this is a reminder of how complex these types of deals can be.

It’s never easy to sign a player off the back of a successful World Cup. And Fernandez’s has been one of the most successful in recent memory.

Already a starter for Argentina aged just twenty-one, he has catapulted himself right into the general footballing consciousness as one of the best young midfielders about. And he could yet win it.

That obviously comes at a cost. Rumours that Fernandez’s release clause is actually around £30m lower than reported here look to have been wide of the mark.

Benfica are used to this kind of interest in one of their hot young players. They are well-versed in dealing with bidding wars between some of the biggest dogs in football.

You can guarantee that they won’t blink. If Liverpool are to secure Fernandez, they’ll have to move quickly and they’ll have to pay high. If contact hasn’t yet been made, then it definitely needs to be very soon.
