Cody Gakpo has been hailed by Dutch national media after the Liverpool man turned in an excellent performance against Norway.

It has been a difficult season for Gakpo, who has regularly found himself as the focal point for criticism after churning out repeatedly ineffectual displays.

However, the 26-year-old has often been better while playing for the Netherlands, and that continued with an 82-minute showing on Friday which has left multiple outlets raving about him.

Gakpo hailed as Netherlands’ star man

Having failed to replicate his form of last season, Gakpo’s future at Liverpool is in some doubt heading into the summer.

Nevertheless, he is expected to be a key man for the Netherlands at the World Cup, and he demonstrated why once again with a performance against Norway which Voetbal Primeur rated as a 7.5 out of 10; the best score alongside Reds teammate Virgil van Dijk.

It’s claimed that Gakpo was ‘by far the most threatening’ player and that he showed ‘something extra’ from his usual displays with Liverpool.

Voetbal International also hail Gakpo for posing a ‘great threat,’ handing him another 7.5 rating and a man of the match award.

AD followed suit, praising the Liverpool No. 18 for the game-winning assist, where he caught Sorloth ‘sleeping’, intercepted the ball and set up Tijani Reijnders to score.

With Van Dijk on the scoresheet and Ryan Gravenberch also scoring highly across the board, it was a good night for Liverpool’s Dutch contingent.

However, just as Florian Wirtz continues to look like a different player for Germany, Gakpo is showing why he should not take the full portion of blame for his struggling club performances this season.

Arne Slot needs to find a way to get this version of Gakpo regularly turning up with Liverpool.
