Mohamed Salah is now expected to leave Liverpool for free in the summer despite his contract running until 2027.

In a shock announcement, the Reds confirmed on March 24 that Salah is leaving Anfield after the 2025/26 season comes to a close.

Further reports have said he is departing Liverpool for free despite his contract situation, and a new update says the Saudi Investment Fund earmarked around €50 million for their plan to sign the 33-year-old.

Is Mohamed Salah Liverpool’s greatest EVER player?

Saudi Investment Fund were ready to pay €50m to sign Mohamed Salah from Liverpool

Journalist Ismael Mahmoud took to X/Twitter to share the news after it emerged Liverpool are expected to see the Egyptian move for free.

He wrote: “While the Saudi Investment Fund was preparing around €50 million in their plan to sign Salah from Liverpool in the summer, Liverpool reached an agreement to allow Salah to leave without a fee .

“First called by @_pauljoyce and as Ramy Abbas confirmed, there are nothing regarding the new club for Mo, even no talks till now.”

Exactly why Liverpool are now seemingly happy to let one of their top players leave for nothing despite having over a year left on his contract remains to be seen.

More details are likely to emerge in the coming days, and it will be interesting to see if Salah’s interview post-Leeds United late in 2025 have played any role in the club being open to a free transfer.
