Mohamed Salah has shocked the football world with an evening announcement that his time at Liverpool is drawing to a close.

The Egyptian released an emotional video online bidding farewell to the club he has spent almost a decade at.

Liverpool confirmed Salah’s exit in a statement around the same time, claiming he will leave at the end of the season, despite having a year left on his contract.

Is Mohamed Salah Liverpool’s greatest EVER player?

Pretty bizarre, then, to hear from transfer expert Ben Jacobs that he is expected to leave on a free transfer.

Mohamed Salah to leave Liverpool for nothing

It has naturally been a bit of a media frenzy since the news broke, with fans all around the Premier League naturally shocked at this out-of-the-blue announcement.

Amidst the chaos, Jacobs took to X to discuss next steps.

He writes: “Mo Salah announces he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season. Saudi interest remains strong in the Egyptian.

“Understand Mo Salah will leave on a free transfer despite having a year left this summer.”

Jacobs is as reliable a transfer source as you are likely to find, so his information should be taken on board.

But it makes no sense. Surely Liverpool can find a buyer for a player who was amongst the best in the world just last season. Liverpool will need to replace Salah, and any funds to put toward that recruitment would help. So why on earth would we let him go for nothing?

Hopefully, that’s a question that gets answered in the coming days.
