Liverpool supporters are split on whether or not they want Arne Slot to carry on as head coach next season.

The Dutchman is coming under pressure after leading the Reds to a disappointing season, with a slow and uninspiring style of football turning many fans off.

However, despite some patchy performances, Liverpool are still well-placed to secure Champions League football and could even still win a trophy. Slot retains backing from owners FSG, and according to the man himself, the potential within the Liverpool squad means that things will only get better.

Arne Slot thinks Tottenham will be a tough game because of their new manager, who has lost four games in a row! 😵‍💫

Slot putting faith in young Liverpool stars

Part of the problem for Liverpool this season is that they allowed such a high turnover of players from their title-winning team of last year. Slot and Richard Hughes decided to break up a winning team, and according to the head coach, that was with the aim of building another.

“There’s a lot of potential, I think the players we’ve signed are mainly young players, that’s the model of the club,” the 47-year-old told Sky Sports before Liverpool’s game against Tottenham on Sunday.

“Even players signed two or three years ago, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, these players are not 18 or 19 anymore but they have the best years in their careers still to come and that’s also for the players we’ve signed and these signings have adjusted more and more to the Premier League, to the Champions League, to living abroad for the first time in their lives.”

“We’ve won quite a lot of games recently, so that tells you the improvement of the team and the individuals and I’m 100 per cent sure that the best is yet to come because there’s individual progress to be made and is already happening and the longer they play together, it’s been shown all over the world that successful teams usually play long together and that’s what we’re trying to achieve with these players as well.”

Slot also pointed to the fact that Liverpool are already starting to show improvements as the squad become more used to each other.

“I’m not saying we are playing the best football we’ve ever seen,” he said. “But in eight out of 10 games, maybe even more, we are playing better than the other team, creating more chances. All the data is in our favour but that is not always shown in the score.”

Analysis: Liverpool can only get better

The one shining light for Liverpool this season has been that they do in fact have top quality players who have shown signs of promise together.

Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz’s partnership is the best example of this, and if the Reds can lean on that, while also developing the likes of Gravenberch, Szoboszlai even further, they will have the nucleus of a potentially exceptional team.

The summer transfer window is going to be important in that respect, because there are some clear and glaring holes within the Liverpool squad.

The wide forward areas in particular need addressing, but if the Reds can fill those with a couple of more potentially world-class players who can grow together with current stars of a similar age, Liverpool’s future will surely look bright.

Sadly for Slot, the biggest blot on the copybook may be he himself, and there is a chance he will not be at the helm to see the best of these players as a collective. But Liverpool appear willing to give him time, so if they can get it right in the market and push on next season, the players ultimately prove him right and save his job.
