Liverpool have been left short of centre-back options this season and can no longer sign Marc Guehi.
Joe Gomez could leave before the 2026/27 season gets underway, while Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation remains unresolved.
It means the Frenchman is due to depart for free this summer. That would leave Liverpool, if they also let Gomez go as has been suggested, with just two senior centre-backs, one of whom is a 19-year-old who has missed most of 2025/26 due to injury.
In turn, it seems obvious that Liverpool needed to complete a deal for Marc Guehi.

Liverpool fans debate centre-back signing
The centre-back has been linked since the summer and has a plethora of Premier League experience.
But after seeing Guehi pick Manchester City, fans have been using Rousing The Kop’s TalkingPoints platform to debate which other options should be signed instead.
One fan wrote: “[Nico] Schlotterbeck another option on a free in the summer unless Bayern decide they want him.”
“Micky van de Ven should be the best target player to sign,” stated a second.
Another commented: “I’ll chuck out another suggestion: Jean-Paul van Hecke from Brighton.”
“Liverpool should go for Fulham centre back Calvin Bassey; he is a complete defender.”
“Whoever comes in has to be ready to start immediately. There’s not loads out there who could do it, [Alessandro] Bastoni is definitely one.”
How do you think Liverpool should handle the contract situations of Konate, Van Dijk, and Gomez?
Liverpool have interest in Micky van de Ven and Nico Schlotterbeck
Potential shouts for Bassey and Van Hecke are interesting, but there hasn’t really been any suggestion Liverpool could move for the duo.
Bastoni has been offered to the club previously, but again, it remains to be seen whether the Reds would actually be interested in the Italian.
However, it has been reported as recently as this week that Liverpool have ‘genuine’ interest in Van de Ven, whose situation at Tottenham remains up in the air.
Meanwhile, it was claimed last week that the Premier League champions could sign Schlotterbeck ahead of Bayern Munich amid his contract expiring at the end of June 2026.
