The January transfer window has been open for less than a day, but one player has already left Liverpool on a permanent basis.
The Reds spent over £400m in the 2025 summer transfer window, including breaking the British transfer record for Alexander Isak.
In turn, reports that Liverpool could have a quiet January transfer window on the incomings front probably should not be that surprising.
Liverpool can only sign ONE player this January, which position should they strengthen?
However, while new signings may not be that frequent over the next several weeks, exits could, and already have, happened.
James Norris leaves Liverpool permanently
After a successful loan spell in the second half of 2025, it was recently reported that James Norris was in discussions to sign for Shelbourne.
Now, on January 1, Liverpool have confirmed the versatile left-back’s exit in an official statement on their website.
It reads: “James Norris has completed a permanent transfer from Liverpool FC to Shelbourne.
“The 22-year-old had been on loan with the Irish Premier Division side since February.
“A Scouser who joined the Reds’ Academy at U9 level, Norris departs having made two senior appearances for the club. He was named on the bench for Liverpool four times last season too.
“The versatile left-sided player has been capped by England at U19 level and his career will now continue with Shelbourne.
“Everyone at Liverpool FC wishes James the best of luck for the future.”
No transfer fee is mentioned in the report, though the 22-year-old is currently valued at €175,000 via Transfermarkt.

Other players who could leave Liverpool in January
As well as Norris, it has been reported that Liverpool could loan Trent Kone-Doherty this winter.
The 19-year-old is one of several young players who have been mooted for potential loan moves.
The same report said that Trey Nyoni has transfer interest, but the club’s current injury issues may hamper any potential exit.
Rhys Williams is another name discussed for a departure over the next month or so.
