Liverpool have been linked with a few players as we head towards the 2026 January transfer window.

Antoine Semenyo was thought to be a target for the Reds ahead of his release clause becoming active in January.

However, it now looks as though Semenyo would prefer to join Manchester City next month.

Elsewhere, Marc Guehi has been linked, but he is set to become a free agent at the end of June, and a summer move has been mooted as the most likely option.

Nico Schlotterbeck is another potential target ahead of 2026, but it doesn’t appear as though a lot will be happening next month.

Liverpool could have a quiet January transfer window

A report from The Athletic this week has said that Liverpool have the freedom to react in the market if needed, but will likely stick with what they have.

This news has not gone down well with fans on social media, who have let their ire towards FSG be known.

One fan wrote: “FSG back to being FSG.”

A second added: “FSG back to being FSG. Joyce gave it away after last Summer, said it was a once-off. We need a midfielder, centre back and attacker but FSG are clearly gambling on us having enough already for top 4.”

Another supporter echoed: “FSG finally back to being FSG.”

“So we intend to finish the second half of this season with 1 fit striker and two fit CBs. Yeah they are satisfied with top 4 for this season,” wrote a fourth.

A fifth stated: “Freedom To React FC It’s amazing how many different wordings they come up with to say we are not buying anybody despite an injury and defensive crisis.”

“One current fit centre back, we’ve got no attackers but sure they’re happy with what they have and will stick with that,” another fan added.

While a seventh Liverpool fan simply responded to the news by tweeting: “Pathetic”.

Why Liverpool don’t need to spend in January

Should Arne Slot’s squad be strengthened in January? Most would say yes.

But the reality of the situation is that Liverpool could still make the top four this season, and even if they don’t, it’s not a huge issue.

As Kieran Maguire has previously explained, the Reds can survive without Champions League football for a year or two due to their other revenue sources.

Speaking at the end of October, the finance expert said: “They’ve got an awful lot of leeway, Liverpool, because FSG run quite a conservative ship, so that they’ve not incurred huge losses.

“So one year out of the Champions League is something which they can deal with easily, two years is imperfect, if it gets to three, then you’ve got a problem, but I think we’re a long way off that.

“The recent expansion of Anfield, the new deal with Adidas, I suspect there will be a renewal of the deal with Standard Chartered as well. They will prime the pump very well as far as the money coming into the club is concerned.

“Champions League participation, it’s desirable but not essential, simply because Liverpool are such a well-run club on other issues that they can survive without it.”

This could explain why FSG are in no rush to spend in January, as gambling on their current group of players making the top four this term does not have a huge downside.
