Liverpool fans have a lot to say about Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards messing up one deal in 2025

Liverpool spent over £400m during the 2025 summer transfer window and broke the British transfer record.

However, it’s fair to say that not all the business completed this summer has worked out thus far.

Hugo Ekitike has been excellent, but his striker counterpart, Alexander Isak, has just one Premier League goal to his name.

While there is still time for players like Isak and the ever-improving Florian Wirtz to reach their full potential, one deal that never got over the line is now angering fans this week.

Marc Guehi transfer failure angers Liverpool fans

Liverpool made a £35m offer for Marc Guehi in the summer, but a move was not finalised.

Now, club chiefs Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards have drawn the ire of fans on social media this week.

One fan wrote: “Hughes and Edwards messed up on Guehi in the summer. Paying an extra £5m would’ve made him a LFC player already; we’d be 2nd/3rd now. Deal now more complex: bigger signing fee, higher wages expected. More interest in him; LFC less appealing. Edwards & Hughes botched it.”

A second echoed: “Totally agree, & there are some weird irrelevant comments — basically this was a botch job transfer leading to Glasner scuppering it on the last day of the STW. Paying the extra (£5-10m imo) would’ve secured this transfer sooner in the summer and we would still be in the title race.”

“For sure! What a mess,” agreed a third.

Another claimed: “Yep, false economy, if we get him in January it will cost more as he will demand a bigger fee and wages, and lost 3 months of season without him, get him in summer n those numbers go bigger again and lost a season of him. Tried to be clever, screwed the season!”

A fifth wrote: “Penny pinching whilst dropping 130m on Isak after Hugo already arrived and was in the shirt & scoring is wildly irresponsible and not the Liverpool way. How these have escaped judgment through all of this is beyond belief. They dissected the squad and failed to plug the gaps.”

“After splashing the cash for two record-breaking signings, you refused to spend an extra 5m to replace Quansah!? What was questionable proved to be disastrous for the club. Responsibility is definitely on Hughes and Edwards,” tweeted another.

But why are Liverpool fans now suddenly so angry about the failed Guehi transfer, months after it happened?

Bayern Munich speaking to Marc Guehi

Well, while previous reports have linked Liverpool with the centre-back again, updates this week suggest a potential move to Anfield is by no means guaranteed.

Jamie Carragher thinks the Reds could explore alternatives to Guehi in 2026.

Meanwhile, it was recently stated that Bayern Munich were planning talks with the soon-to-be free agent.

Another update from Fabrizio Romano has since emerged, revealing that the German outfit have already had two meetings about the player.

Because they are a foreign side, they can sign Guehi to a pre-contract agreement from January 1, ahead of getting him for nothing in the summer.

Liverpool, on the other hand, would need to cough up to land him now, and as some fans pointed out, that will likely cost them a lot more.
