Jamie Carragher was wrong about his Arne Slot points target

Liverpool recently played three Premier League fixtures in seven days, and as mentioned, they secured five points.

Prior to the West Ham United game, Carragher told Slot he needed seven points to keep his job.

Towards the end of the Leeds stalemate, Sky Sports’ Zinny Boswell said: “Jamie Carragher told Arne Slot he needed seven points from his next three games to save his job at Liverpool just over a week ago. Unless they can score a late winner here, Slot will have failed to meet that target.”

However, writing in his column for the Telegraph on Friday, the former Liverpool stopper has admitted he was wrong to say that.

Carragher wrote: “My mistake was to suggest he needed a minimum of seven points from nine. It was more important for Slot to show he can take big decisions to stop the bleeding.

“Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last four, with two wins. Slot made changes to his line-up to make the games less open and help his defenders.”

While there are still problems, Liverpool’s recent run of form suggests they have started to turn a corner under the Dutchman.

However, that spell of just three wins from 12 in all competitions has left the Reds outside the Premier League top four.

Liverpool can survive without Champions League football from a financial perspective, but whether FSG would be happy to keep Slot in a job without a top-four finish remains to be seen.

They are currently three adrift of Crystal Palace going into the Brighton game, but their goal difference means they can move no higher than fifth come the end of Saturday.

In the previous two campaigns, Chelsea (69) and Aston Villa (68) have finished fourth.

So Liverpool will likely need another 47 points from their remaining league games this term to reach 70 and give themselves a good chance of playing in Europe’s premier cup competition in 2026/27.
