What Liverpool are saying about Ibrahima Konate’s future after another big error vs PSV

Ibrahima Konate’s form has been a cause for concern at Liverpool in the 2025/26 season.

Amid a torrid campaign so far, fans have lost faith in Konate and are not overly keen on the centre-back signing a new deal.

The Frenchman remains a regular starter in Liverpool’s backline, but his performances continue to underwhelm.

Konate struggled against PSV on Wednesday and was taken off late in the match as Arne Slot tried his best to salvage something from the fixture.

Despite being viewed as one of the worst performers on the night, though, it appears Liverpool want to keep the stopper around beyond 2025/26.

Ibrahima Konate Liverpool contract update

Journalist Dean Jones has provided an update on Thursday, in which he stated the Reds remain keen on agreeing fresh terms.

He said: “We all know Konate’s contract expires in the summer, so they’ve been trying to get him to sign a new deal

“He made another high-profile error in the Champions League this week yet that hasn’t deterred Liverpool, and they feel the last round of talks went pretty well and there was optimism he will end up staying.

“Interestingly, over in Spain, they’re growing in confidence that Konate wants to join them and is going to agree to join Real Madrid in 2026.

“It kind of mirrors where we were with Trent Alexander-Arnold last year, he can’t afford this to linger for too long, a decision is coming relatively soon, Liverpool would like this one decided by the end of the year.”

Every centre-back linked with Liverpool

Regardless of whether Konate sticks around beyond the current campaign, Liverpool need a new centre-back.

On that front, they could make a January move for Marc Guehi after failing to land him in the summer.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are interested in Zeki Celik, who has also attracted attention from the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal.

Dayot Upamecano is another option, but Bayern Munich insist they want to keep the soon-to-be free agent.
