Liverpool making the decision to sign so many world-class players at once in the summer may have made Florian Wirtz worse this season.
Ever since the young German joined the Anfield outfit, nothing seems to have gone right for him.
Indeed, Liverpool still haven’t figured out the best way to use Wirtz yet, which hasn’t likely helped matters much, but the fact that they have so many players who want to be the best on the team is also concerning.
Alongside Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Mohamed Salah are also trying to prove their worth each week, and with all three players competing against one another, it’s making it harder for them to shine.

And now, German legend Oliver Bierhoff has admitted that this could be one of the reasons why the 22-year-old hasn’t played as well as he can for the Anfield outfit yet.
Oliver Bierhoff thinks that Liverpool have too many players with the ‘ambition to play’ among their ranks
Everybody knew that it was going to take some time for Liverpool to get the best out of their first-team squad this season.
Changes were made across the board, but since they started the campaign by winning all five of their opening Premier League games, most people thought they’d cruise to the title.
However, since the start of October, everything has gone pear-shaped with the Reds now seven points adrift of first-placed Arsenal.
A lot of this is down to the poor form of Liverpool’s squad, but Bierhoff thinks that because most of their team are trying to be the main man, it’s negatively affected the way Wirtz plays.
They’ve probably bought too many players who have the ambition to play,” he said to Sky Sports Germany.
“But, with him, I’m not worried about him asserting himself, based on what I’ve seen of him.
“He’s a brilliant footballer, has the right timing and the right vision, and that’s why you have to give him a little time. You used to say in Italy that the first season doesn’t count at all.”
Florian Wirtz needs to prove why Liverpool spent over £100 million to sign him in the summer
At the moment, it’s felt like most of Liverpool’s summer signings have flopped.
Hugo Ekitike is the exception to this, of course, with the Frenchman being among the Reds’ best-performing players this season.
Although one or two players have lived up to the hype at Liverpool, Wirtz is not one of them.
For Bayer Leverkusen last season, the German was close to unstoppable as he contributed to over 20 goals across all competitions.
Most fans thought that the German would be the perfect replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold’s creativity, but, in reality, he’s only managed to chip in with three assists thus far.

Wirtz has been used on the wing, in the centre and even as a shadow striker this term, and even though his performances on the flank were impressive, they’re still not coming on a regular enough basis to justify his price tag.
If he can’t turn his performances around soon and prove that he has what it takes to be Liverpool’s creative spark, some serious questions will need to be asked.
