Is Mohamed Salah finished as a regular starter for Liverpool after eight glorious years?

Mohamed Salah started on the bench as he watched his teammates put in a five star performance against Frankfurt.

One of the biggest talking points so far this season has been around which Reds players are not pulling their weight, and Salah is one of the most prominent names cropping up.

The Egyptian has scored just two league goals and has failed to make any noteworthy contributions in games as of late, something that has seen him drop to the bench twice.

This has left fans wondering where he fits into the team as if it is based on merit this season, he probably does not get anywhere near it.

So, that got us wondering, is Salah’s time at Liverpool almost up?

Liverpool need to prepare for life after Mohamed Salah

It was only last season that Salah was scoring week after week, with supporters left anxious that he would depart at the end of the campaign on a free transfer.

However, he penned a new two-year contract which left all Reds overjoyed, but this emotion has quickly faded into doubt.

Since then, he has not quite been the same player, with former Red Mark Lawrenson wondering whether he has got comfortable with his new deal, suggesting he has put the handbrake on.

It certainly looks a little bit like this, but the more worrying thing in the Egyptian’s case is that Liverpool look a better team when he is not in the side.

They ran rampant against Frankfurt and even though he may have also scored had he started, he had chances of his own when coming off the bench and failed to take any of them.

As well as this, he should have set up Florian Wirtz for his first goal for Liverpool, but instead he shot and wasted a golden opportunity.

This selfishness is not something he needs to be showing right now as being a team player is much more important, especially if he wants to keep his place in the side.

The fact he walked straight down the tunnel after the game also will not have helped his case, with things looking a little uncertain for the 33-year-old right now.

Liverpool should cash in on Mohamed Salah should they get the chance

Again, it feels almost wrong to criticise Salah after everything he has done for the club, so saying he needs to be sold might be incomprehensible.

However, Reds fans will not want his reputation tarnished in any way whatsoever, so selling him to Saudi Arabia in the summer might be beneficial for all parties.

They have been linked with him in the past and would offer a transfer fee too good to refuse, meaning Liverpool would get a good amount of money to improve the team further.

He would not be around much longer anyway so the future stars, such as Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, need the team built around them, with Salah leaving the only way this can happen efficiently.

No matter what, he will always be a Liverpool legend and one of the best players to grace the Premier League, but sometimes it is better to die a hero than live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
