Curtis Jones warns rivals that ‘the real Florian Wirtz’ is coming to Liverpool soon

Florian Wirtz silenced some of his many critics after registering two assists during Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.

The Reds finally got back to winning ways at Deutsche Bank Park, with Wirtz at the centre of a much better performance.

Liverpool‘s £116m signing has been the subject of scrutiny from all angles following a mega-money move this summer.

Having failed to register a goal or assist since August’s Community Shield, the knives have well and truly been out for Wirtz.

Few of his critics have been from inside Liverpool, though, with the 22-year-old clearly impressing those who watch him more closely.

Wirtz’s Liverpool teammates were clearly delighted for him after his perfectly weighted pass to Cody Gakpo was swept home, and after seeing the German claim a second assist of the night soon after, Curtis Jones has backed Wirtz to show everyone exactly how good he is.

Curtis Jones in no doubt over Florian Wirtz quality

Wirtz and Jones were linking up well during pre-season for Liverpool, although they have rarely been able to rekindle that partnership since the real fixtures began.

The quiet performances of Liverpool’s new No. 7 have led to many rival supporters being quick to label him as an expensive flop.

But speaking to LFCTV after Wednesday’s win, Jones suggested that those fans are going to be left looking very silly indeed by Wirtz.

“I say all the time on Flo, he’s one of those lads that if you don’t think he’s good, you don’t understand the game,” says the midfielder.

“Obviously he’s been bought for a huge price-tag, that’s not his fault, and everybody expects goals and assists. We do as well obviously, but in terms of what he brings into the team, where he goes and moves, he might not actually get on the ball, but it helps me and Dom [Szoboszlai]. As he moves a lad has to stay with Flo and it means that I’m free and that’s just the smart thing of how he plays.

“It’s a matter of time before he gets his goals and assists, you saw there he just got two and I told him just carry on. From the first day you could see he had that spark.

“The Premier League as well, of course it’s a huge change as well but he’s a smart lad, intelligent lad, technically he’s unbelievable as well, so it’s a matter of time before everybody sees the real Flo. We see it every day when he trains, I can’t wait until everybody really, really sees him. It’s exciting times for us and the whole team.”

Jones and Wirtz must stay in the team

It was not only Wirtz who impressed for Liverpool in Frankfurt, Jones put in an impressive performance as well.

The two clearly have a connection on the pitch, and in such lean times for Liverpool, they need to maximise anything that is working as much as possible.

Having been dropped to the bench against both Chelsea and Man United, it would be lunacy for Arne Slot to take Wirtz out of the team for Saturday’s clash with Brentford.

The 22-year-old will hopefully be buoyed by his two assists, and it is vital he is given the chance to keep that going.

With Jones also in good form, Slot needs to get them both on the pitch as Liverpool face another tricky Premier League away day.
