Cody Gakpo admits he’s realised something amazing about Liverpool after nearly three years

Cody Gakpo has been a first-team regular with Liverpool for some time now.

The attacker was brought in for around £43million from PSV by Jurgen Klopp, and since then, he’s more than left his mark on Anfield.

Indeed, his 2025-26 season hasn’t started in the best way possible due to his lack of form, but as the season goes on and he gets more used to his new teammates, such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, everything should fall into place.

However, while away on international duty with the Netherlands, it seems like the attacker has had a revelation about Liverpool.

Now that Luis Diaz has exited Anfield, Gakpo is the Reds’ only senior left-winger at the club.

Indeed, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike, and Isak can all be used there if needed, but more often than not, Arne Slot will choose Gakpo to be his winger.

Throughout his time in L4, the attacker has been used on the left and as a striker, with his most prolific season coming last term.

And, even though he has hardly any competition for his place in the team, it feels like he could be performing way better.

That is, especially since Gakpo says that Liverpool feels more like home than Holland now.

“[I feel] as home as I can be! Very much at home. Sometimes when I am in Holland I want to go home [to Liverpool], so that means I feel very much at home here,” he said to Liverpool’s official website.

“It’s the whole environment. A great team, great club and great people, obviously my family as well, so that all together makes it home.”

Throughout the entirety of the summer transfer window, most people expected Liverpool to sign a new striker and a new left winger.

Both Diaz and Darwin Nunez ended up exiting Anfield in the summer, which left two gaping holes in Slot’s attack.

And, while Isak was always going to be the main target, the fact that Ekitike was brought in made some fans feel like their move for the Sweden international was off.

However, in the end, that isn’t how things worked out, and now, the Reds have the dilemma of who to start between Ekitike and Isak.

Not only does this show how much faith Slot has in Gakpo, but it also proves that Liverpool aren’t likely to deviate from their original targets unless it’s a genuine market opportunity.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen in the future, but with Malick Fofana’s agent saying he belongs at Liverpool, it’s unlikely that this sort of transfer rumour will die down.
