Kostas Tsimikas does something he never managed in five years at Liverpool as loan revival continues

Kostas Tsimikas has been enjoying himself since leaving Liverpool on loan during the summer.

The left-back had been shunted down to third choice at Anfield following the arrival of Milos Kerkez.

An exit seemed inevitable, and it eventually came when Tsimikas joined Roma for the season towards the end of August.

Since then, Tsimikas has been showing Liverpool what they are missing. He has settled in well under Gian Piero Gasperini, quickly establishing himself as a potential starter at the Stadio Olimpico.

For those who have watched the Greek carefully during his five years at Liverpool, that should not be a surprise. Despite some question marks over his ability to become a regular in the XI, Tsimikas was a quality and reliable deputy for Andy Robertson.

On Thursday, the two players came head to head on the international stage, with Greece facing Scotland at Hampden Park. Although Robertson ultimately won the day, Tsimikas finally scored his first goal for seven long years.

Kostas Tsimikas registers first goal since 2018

As a left-back, Tsimikas was never expected to be the biggest goal threat whenever he played for Liverpool.

Robertson himself has only 12 goals across more than eight years with the Reds, after all.

Nevertheless, the Greek would still have loved to have found the net for Liverpool across half a decade in red.

Unfortunately, it never happened. But having left Anfield this summer, Tsimikas feels a different player. That notion was reaffirmed on Thursday, when he slammed home a right-footed effort to put Greece into the lead at Hampden.

As it turns out, this was not only Tsimikas’ first goal since joining Liverpool, but his first since his days on loan at Willem II in 2017/18.

Prior to Thursday, the last time the 29-year-old scored was in May 2018, when he registered during a 2-2 draw against Vitesse Arnhem.

Tsimikas could not prevent a 3-1 loss for Greece on the night, but he’ll feel good after finally ending an extremely long drought.

Could Tsimikas have a future at Liverpool?

Tsimikas’ lack of a Liverpool goal could, of course, still be remedied. The former Olympiacos full-back is scheduled to return to Merseyside ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Robertson is potentially leaving at the end of the current season, meaning there may be a spot opening in Liverpool’s left-back department.

Whether that becomes the case or not will likely depend on how Robertson and Kerkez both perform for the rest of the campaign.

Should the Scotland captain leave, though, there is a chance Tsimikas could come back. As he continues to show with Roma and Greece, he is a steady player who should not be written off just yet.
