Dutch national media say why Jeremie Frimpong has just re-opened the debate over his best position

Several members of Liverpool’s team were involved in international fixtures on Thursday evening.

Despite the Reds not being in the best of form over the last few weeks, it’s clear that their players still have plenty of quality within them.

This is likely one of the main reasons why so many of Liverpool’s first-team squad were selected to represent their countries, with four being called up to the Netherlands squad.

And, while Cody Gakpo may be taking all the headlines due to his two goals and an assist, it’s also nice for the Reds’ fans to find out how their other players performed.

That is, especially since some players, such as Jeremie Frimpong, haven’t been at their best for Liverpool.

Jeremie Frimpong underperformed once again

Liverpool have had a couple of problem areas pop up among their ranks this season.

One of the main areas of concern has been their back four, with Ibrahima Konate often being dubbed Arne Slot’s worst player over the last few weeks.

After Konate, however, the debate about who should start at right-back is rife with Dutch media also saying that they can’t seem to figure out where Frimpong’s best position is, following his poor display against Malta.

AD rated Frimpong’s performance a 6/10 and wrote: “The right winger had quickly saddled his guard, Ryan Camenzuli, with a yellow card, and the attacker regularly raced towards the byline.

“A cross to Cody Gakpo after fifteen minutes could have resulted in a goal, but the Liverpool forward fired over.

“Frimpong, after the break, fired a shot that caught Bonello’s fists and was substituted midway through the second half, with Donyell Malen replacing him.”

De Telegraaf echoed these thoughts, but rated him a 5/10.

“His performance against Malta will reignite the debate about whether Frimpong is actually a winger,” they wrote.

“He was sought after early on. But he didn’t start the match well. His first crosses went generously over the penalty area. He doesn’t have a great cross and is also far too hasty for a winger.

“After a good move, he often doesn’t know how to follow through.”

Liverpool must figure out where the best position for Jeremie Frimpong is before it’s too late

Many fans expected Frimpong to fit right into Slot’s plans and easily replace Trent Alexander-Arnold.

However, over the last few weeks, it’s been made clear that, while Liverpool don’t miss the Englishman, they do need to find a new source of creativity among their starting XI.

Most thought that this would end up being Frimpong, especially after he contributed to 17 goals across all competitions last season.

However, the reality is that it’s still unclear where Frimpong’s best position is, as he isn’t the best defensively, but he also hasn’t got much about him when through on goal.

For now, Slot will try and use him as a right-back to challenge Conor Bradley, but on the face of things, it’s clear that he’s not the answer to the Reds’ problems.
