Sami Mokbel says Liverpool signing Marc Guehi in January would make no sense

Liverpool are already being linked with moves for new players even though the transfer window isn’t even open.

The Reds spent a hefty chunk of change during the summer transfer window, with several members of their first-team squad getting shipped out to fund it.

Some sales, such as Darwin Nunez’s, have worked out, but, at the moment, it feels like some, such as Luis Diaz’s, are going to be sales that Arne Slot will regret.

Liverpool’s big-name signings of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak are yet to hit the ground running at their new club, which is a massive cause for concern.

That is, especially since the duo could end up costing over £240million if all add-ons are met.

Despite this massive amount of spending, links with Marc Guehi have failed to die down, with Giovanni Leoni’s season-long injury adding even more fuel to the fire.

With the defensive struggles that Liverpool have undergone this season, it feels highly unlikely that talks of a new defender joining the club in January will go away anytime soon.

It’s clear that the Anfield outfit still have around £35million to play with in their transfer kitty, as that’s what they were willing to pay for Guehi, even though he only cost Crystal Palace around £20million to sign in the first place.

However, due to the sheer number of teams that need new centre-backs, prices will be sky high for anyone with a decent amount of time left on their contracts.

And now, as per a report from BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel, it seems like even though going the rest of the season with just three centre-backs is seen as a ‘risk’ for Liverpool, it also makes ‘little business sense’ for them to sign the Englishman.

“It is clear that they were probably short of one centre-back – they definitely are now following the season-ending ACL injury suffered by Giovanni Leoni,” he wrote.

“Going into the rest of the season with just three centre-backs in Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez is a risk, so if there is an opportunity to sign one in the winter window then they will consider it.

“Of course, we know of their interest in Marc Guehi having come so close to signing him in the summer. Would they look to do that deal in January?

“Given Guehi is available for nothing at the end of the season, it makes little business sense to pay a fee for him in January.”

It goes without saying that the last couple of weeks have been rather hard for Liverpool.

They’ve now lost three games on the bounce across all competitions, with one of their defeats even coming against Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Not only is this embarrassing, but it also shows where the Reds’ main problems lie.

One of Liverpool’s main liabilities this season has been Ibrahima Konate, and, since he’s in the final year of his deal with Liverpool, the club clearly have some big choices to make.

Although no team would want to lose a first-team regular for nothing, at the moment, it feels like the Frenchman is more or less forcing his way out due to his horrendous performances.

The centre-back is a shadow of his former self, and, with the potential of signing Guehi for nothing fast approaching, Richard Hughes, Slot, and Michael Edwards have a lot to still try and work out.
