Arne Slot has made an even bigger mistake at Liverpool than not signing Marc Guehi this summer

Liverpool may still be second in the Premier League table, but at the moment, it isn’t a surprise to see fans not happy with the performances of the Anfield outfit.

The club have lost their last three games across all competitions, with their defeats against Chelsea and Crystal Palace both coming in the dying embers of their games.

Many may think this is karma due to the number of late goals the Reds scored at the start of the season; however, after spending £450million in the summer, you’d have expected a lot more from Liverpool.

Most fans and pundits expected the Merseyside outfit to run away with the Premier League and perhaps even win the Champions League.

However, after their last three outings, it’s hard to see how Arne Slot’s men will even win one.

And now, as we’re getting deeper into the campaign, the cracks among Liverpool’s ranks are starting to show with a massive mistake that Slot made in the summer now being made more than obvious.

Liverpool not replacing Luis Diaz could end up being worse than them not signing Marc Guehi

One of the main areas of weakness among the Anfield outfit’s ranks this summer has been their defence.

Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Ibrahima Konate have all performed well below par with their mistakes costing Liverpool a goal or two.

However, an even bigger problem that has started to show is the lack of form that Cody Gakpo is in.

The Dutchman was in decent form last term, but now that he’s the Reds’ only natural left-winger, it feels like he’s failing to live up to the standards that Luis Diaz set last term.

After Mohamed Salah, Diaz was the Reds’ most important player, and although Liverpool got a good deal for him from Bayern Munich, the fact that they didn’t replace him seems like a massive mistake.

Diaz may have entered the final two years of his deal at Anfield, but there was still plenty more he could give the club.

The fact that the Colombian could be used on the left wing or as a striker was one of his main assets, and while Gakpo can also do this, he can’t play either position as well as Diaz did.

For example, during the 2025-26 season so far, Diaz has played 10 games across all competitions and has managed to contribute to 10 goals while being used on the left wing.

Whereas Gakpo, who has also been used on the left, also played 10 games, but he’s only contributed to four goals.

Indeed, the Premier League is a much stronger division than the Bundesliga, but now that Gakpo is the only left-winger, you’d think he’d be stepping up to the plate more, rather than shying away from the spotlight.

Of course, it’s still early in the season and things could change, but at the moment, Slot not replacing Diaz feels like a bigger mistake than him missing out on Marc Guehi, despite the form of players such as Konate.
