Paul Scholes says £8m Liverpool man will play a lot more than people expected him to this season

Liverpool have been on a bit of a roller coaster ride this season.

They started their 2025-26 Premier League campaign off with five straight wins, with their team managing to overcome every opponent they faced.

However, over the last 10 days or so, things have taken a turn for the worse as the Reds have lost three games in a row across all competitions, including a game against Crystal Palace.

Of course, these losses aren’t the end of the world as Arne Slot’s men are still sitting second in the table, but, unless they manage to turn things around after the international break, it could become a concern.

The Reds’ three losses are due to a number of factors, but one of the main ones is that players haven’t been performing to the standards they’ve shown previously.

This, after spending over £450million, is likely the last thing that Slot and Richard Hughes wanted to see, with Paul Scholes now saying that a player among the Reds’ ranks is likely to play a lot more football than most expected him to this season.

Paul Scholes thinks Andy Robertson will play a lot more football for Liverpool than most expect him to this season

Last season, one of Liverpool’s main problem areas was their left-back.

Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson were the weak link in Slot’s starting XI, so it wasn’t a surprise to see Milos Kerkez welcomed through the Anfield doors in the summer.

However, since the Hungarian has joined, he’s played well below his usual standards, which has meant that Robertson has been given a decent amount of playing time.

And, to be honest, when comparing the performances of the two, it feels like the Scotsman has been the better player, even though he is much slower than the former Bournemouth man.

Indeed, Slot’s system isn’t exactly playing to Kerkez’s strengths at the moment, but even with this in mind, it still feels like a lot more should be coming from him.

In fact, former Manchester United ace Scholes has even said that he expects Robertson, who joined the club for £8million, to get a lot of game time this season.

“I mean, Andy Robertson, everyone thought he needed replacing and looking at it, did he really?” he said on The Overlap’s Fan Debate.

“I think he will play a lot more football than he would have been expecting from what we’ve seen.”

Andy Robertson still has a lot to give Liverpool

Although it’s clear that Robertson isn’t as fast as he used to be, his range of passing is still second to none.

His football brain is also prominent, with the defender often making the right decisions on the pitch, even when under pressure.

As mentioned, Slot’s system benefits Robertson more than Kerkez, which is likely another reason why he’s performed better this term, but, since the Hungarian is only 21 years old, there’s still plenty of time for him to grow.

Robertson only has a year left on his current deal at Anfield, and, although Tsimikas will be back with Liverpool upon the expiry of his loan, it still feels like the Scotsman is the better player of the two.

So, with this in mind, it would be a surprise to see Liverpool not want to extend his contract, especially if he does play a big part in the way things pan out for the Merseyside outfit this season.
