Liverpool have gone through plenty of backroom changes over the last few years.

This summer, for example, both Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards managed to completely transform Liverpool’s ranks by spending over £450million on new players.

At the moment, some feel like they’re working out, whereas others feel like they need more time to adjust to playing for a team of Liverpool’s stature.

The 2025-26 summer transfer window was the biggest shake-up at Anfield since the summer of 2018, when players such as Alisson and Fabinho were welcomed through Liverpool’s doors.

However, before Hughes came in, Jorg Schmadtke was the club’s sporting director, and after only being with them for a year or so, he ended up leaving in 2024, with his next step in football now potentially revealed.

Jorg Schmadtke could return to football with Borussia Monchengladbach

Although Schmadtke’s Liverpool stint was short and sweet, it still made some massive changes to the club.

During his reign, the German welcomed Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Alexis Mac Allister as part of a midfield shake-up.

Although players such as Florian Wirtz were brought in this summer, the fact that the quartet of midfielders that Schmadtke signed are still among the Reds’ most important players is a testament to how good a job he did at Anfield.

And now, as per an update from Kicker, it seems like the German is gearing up for his next role in football.

The report begins by stating that it’s ‘logical’ for Schmadtke’s name to appear after Monchengladbach’s recent shortcomings.

However, he may not be alone at the Bundesliga outfit, with Jan Schlaudraff also rumoured to be interested in a return as he’s a good ‘buddy’ of Schmadtke’s.

Kicker share that this was a solution that was previously discussed by VfL Bochum, but in the end, nothing came of the links.

Both Schmadtke and Schlaudraff are ‘candidates’ for Monchengladbach in their search for new backroom staff.

Liverpool have moved on to bigger and better things since Jorg Schmadtke’s reign

As mentioned, Hughes and Edwards managed to produce one of the best transfer windows that a club has ever seen in the summer.

Players such as Wirtz and Alexander Isak were welcomed through the doors, and although some of their new arrivals haven’t properly started firing yet, it feels like things will soon click.

The quality of Liverpool’s first-team squad is rather impressive, boasting a world-class player in every position.

Indeed, there have been a couple of blips over the last week or so with their defeats against Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, but, at the moment, it shouldn’t be something for fans to be concerned about.

Their final clash before the October international break is against Chelsea, with Slot likely looking for his men to come back with a bang.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen, but for now, it feels like the Reds are in a good position to triumph over Enzo Maresca’s men and get back to winning ways.
