Liverpool missing out on Marc Guehi might have been one of the worst things to happen to the Anfield outfit.
This season, Ibrahima Konate has performed well below his usual standards, with Virgil van Dijk having to pick up even more slack than usual.
However, the fact that Giovanni Leoni is likely to be out for around a year due to his ACL tear means that it’s unlikely that the Frenchman will be booted out of Arne Slot’s starting XI any time soon.
Of course, Joe Gomez is still around, but after his performance against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, it doesn’t feel like he’s up to scratch either.

This begs the question of whether Guehi will be signed in January, with the Englishman now speaking to his agents about where he sees his future lying.
Marc Guehi has told his agents to keep ‘communication lines’ open with Real Madrid
Guehi was more or less a Liverpool player on transfer deadline day.
However, since Igor Julio chose to join West Ham United over Crystal Palace, Guehi’s move fell through.
Although this didn’t seem like a problem at the start of the season, the performances that Konate has been putting in recently have made fans question whether Guehi’s arrival could’ve ended up being more important than the transfer of Florian Wirtz.
And, even though Liverpool will likely have a chance to sign him in January, that doesn’t feel all that likely.
That is because, according to a report from Caught Offside, Tottenham are now the ‘leading contenders’ to sign him.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are also ‘weighing up’ bids, with the Englishman ‘open’ to testing his skillset in La Liga.
In fact, Guehi has even told his agents to keep ‘communication lines’ with Real Madrid open ahead of his contract expiring at the end of the season.
Liverpool must throw everything at Marc Guehi this season
If Konate’s performances continue as they are now, it’s hard to see how Liverpool would be able to win the Premier League or Champions League title.
The defender has made countless mistakes throughout the 2025-26 season, and although this could just be a blip, with his future still under question, it feels like this could be a season-long problem.
Of course, Gomez could fill in for the Frenchman, but it’s clear that nobody would be as good as Guehi.

Although Liverpool don’t want to make a move for the centre-back in January, with clubs such as Barca and Real Madrid vying for his transfer at the end of the season, it feels like a bidding war could be afoot.
For now, Slot will have to stick with Konate and Van Dijk as his centre-back pairing, but over the next couple of months, if things stay as they are, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Liverpool linked with a January move for Guehi.
