Liverpool managed to beat Atletico Madrid in dramatic fashion on Wednesday evening.

The two clubs were facing one another in the Champions League, with the game ending 3-2 in Liverpool’s favour.

Indeed, there were times throughout the clash when it felt like the Reds would end up losing the game, but fortunately, luck was on their side once again.

Virgil van Dijk’s last-minute header was what eventually got Liverpool over the line and once again proved that the Anfield outfit are here to win everything this season.

However, there were a couple of moments throughout the game that were rather questionable, with one leaving Ally McCoist particularly baffled.

Ally McCoist and Darren Ferguson couldn’t believe Hugo Ekitike missed his shot in the 96th minute

One of the main talking points before the clash kicked off was that Alexander Isak was handed his Liverpool debut.

Many expected the attacker to make a cameo off the bench towards the end of the game, but instead, Slot entrusted him to lead his attacking line from the start.

This meant that Hugo Ekitike was left on the bench, and although he was brought on towards the end of the clash, he failed to show why he deserved to start over the Swede.

These were the exact thoughts of McCoist and Darren Ferguson, who were left baffled by the chance the striker missed in the 96th minute.

“How on earth has he missed that,” Ferguson asked live on TNT Sports.

McCoist then replied: “It just bounces and meets him. “He’s unlucky, but he should score. It’s a brilliant ball from Salah.

“What a move.”

Hugo Ekitike needs to prove his worth to Arne Slot before Alexander Isak gets to full fitness

Ekitike has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season.

The striker has often carried the Reds’ attacking line on his back, with his goals being essential to Liverpool sitting on top of the Premier League table.

However, now that Isak is in contention to start, it’s clear that the Frenchman is going to have to stay consistent to keep his place in Liverpool’s starting XI.

Of course, he can be used as a left winger if needed, but in reality, he’ll want to be used as a number nine.

The season is obviously long and gruelling, but with the way things seem to be headed, unless Ekitike is on top form until the end of the term, his place in the Reds’ attack could be taken by Isak permanently.
