Arne Slot regret over summer sale as midfielder better than any Liverpool player in two stats

Arne Slot sold a lot of Liverpool’s players over the summer.

Last season, the Anfield outfit were one of the best teams in the world, with their Premier League campaign proving how dominant they were.

Indeed, they may have bowed out of the Champions League early after losing to Paris Saint-Germain, but that didn’t stop them from winning one of the toughest domestic leagues in the world.

And, although they were impressive last season, it’s clear that Slot felt like his team needed upgrading across the board.

That is, even if it did end up forcing him into the sale of some players he likely didn’t want to get rid of.

Arne Slot sold Tyler Morton to Lyon in the summer transfer window

One of Liverpool’s transfers that didn’t really cause all that much of a stir in the summer was the exit of Tyler Morton.

The midfielder had an impressive season on loan with Hull City during the 2023-24 campaign and, although he likely expected to be called up to the Reds’ first-team squad more last season, he ended up staying in their reserves.

Instead, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch took up the role of defensive midfield in Slot’s set-up and, to be honest, Morton wasn’t needed.

So, his sale made a lot of sense, especially when the fact that he wanted regular game time is taken into account.

However, now that the Englishman has earned his move to Ligue 1, it feels like his recent performances may be making Slot regret sanctioning his departure.

Tyler Morton is the most accurate crosser in Europe’s top five leagues

During his time within Liverpool’s academy, the 22-year-old was mostly used as a holding midfielder, with others such as James McConnell and Stefan Bajcetic fighting him for a starting spot.

When Jurgen Klopp was in charge, Morton was given a fair few games, but, in reality, it was Bajcetic who he saw taking over from Fabinho upon his departure.

However, after a year filled with injuries, Bajcetic didn’t get up to much either, and, while McConnell may now be spending a season on loan with Ajax, it’s Morton who’s thriving.

This has been shown by the way that Lyon fans have reacted to his performances and the amount of solid tackles and passes he’s put on show in Ligue 1.

And, as per a statistic shared by Squwaka via X, it seems like he’s more than comfortable at Lyon.

“No player in Europe’s top five leagues has made more penalty area entries (29) or made more accurate crosses (10) than Tyler Morton so far this season,” they wrote.

“Enjoying life in Lyon.”

The particularly interesting part of this tweet is the fact that he’s had the most accurate crosses out of all of Europe’s top five leagues.

You’d usually expect a winger to hold that crown, but in reality, it seems like Morton just needed to be moved slightly further forward to unlock his true potential.

This is why Slot may now be regretting his decision to sell the youngster, especially with Endo not getting any younger.
