Joe Gomez could still leave Liverpool after Reds agree deadline day Marc Guehi deal

Joe Gomez’s Liverpool future has been up in the air ever since the first links between Marc Guehi and the Reds were reported.

The centre-back has been a regular figure in the Anfield outfit’s first-team squad, and although his injury history has left a lot to be desired, when called upon, he’s more than done his part.

His experience, coupled with his versatility, are just two of the reasons why both Arne Slot and Jurgen Klopp chose to keep him around.

However, now that the arrival of Guehi is imminent, questions are once again being asked about the future of Gomez.

Joe Gomez may have some late ‘options’ to leave Liverpool this summer

On Sunday evening, AC Milan threw in a £13million bid for Gomez, and even though they’ve now pulled out of negotiations for the defender, rumours are still emerging.

With Guehi’s arrival, Liverpool now have five senior centre-backs among their ranks, with 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni also among those options.

However, as per a report from David Lynch via his personal X account, that number could soon be taken down to four as Gomez may still have some ‘options’ to exit on the table.

“Would be allowed to go mate but there’s not a lot of time and it’d be a bit of a surprise if Milan came back now,” he wrote while replying to a Liverpool fan.

“Perhaps there will be other options late in the day.”

Liverpool cannot allow Joe Gomez to leave this summer

Although Gomez’s best position is centre-back, the fact that he can play across the back four is one of the main reasons he’s been kept around for so long.

The former Charlton man still has plenty of pace about him, and while he may not have bagged his first professional goal yet, he’s constantly bombing up and down the pitch when used at full back.

Although having five senior centre-backs may seem a tad over the top, the fact that Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong are both still trying to get back to full fitness means that there could be a spot for Gomez in Slot’s starting XI.

Even just in the 10 minutes he played against Arsenal on Sunday, it was clear that he’s still a top-quality defender and would be a massive miss around the Liverpool camp if he was moved on.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen, but with the way things have panned out for the Reds this season, anything is possible.
