Liverpool could be about to make a ‘great’ signing that is incredibly clever

Arne Slot somehow managed to win the Premier League title during his first season as the manager of Liverpool.

The Dutchman hardly added any new faces to his ranks last term, but he still managed to take Jurgen Klopp’s team to another level as he got the title over the line.

This summer, however, plenty of things have changed at Anfield with the Reds not only having a massive clear-out but also spending over £200million on all of their new additions.

And now, it feels like Slot is creating one of the best teams in football, especially after the latest transfer news to have emerged from Anfield.

Liverpool signing Giovanni Leoni this summer makes plenty of sense

One of the main areas that still needs reinforcement is Liverpool’s centre-backs.

Both Marc Guehi and Giovanni Leoni have been linked with an Anfield switch this summer, and Slot’s move for the latter of the two makes plenty of sense.

The Italian centre-back is only 18 years old, but he regularly featured for Serie A side Parma last season, which means that he already has plenty of experience under his belt, with bags of potential also on his side.

However, the fact that he’s still just 18 means that, if the Reds acquired his services this summer, as long as he stays with Liverpool and trains with the club for the next three years, they’d be able to register him as homegrown at the club.

And, while the Reds already have their fair share of homegrown players, there are now hardly any who have been homegrown at the club, thanks to the exits of players such as Jarell Quansah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The main reason why this is important is that when registering their team for the Champions League, four of the players in the squad need to be homegrown at the club in order for Slot to have a full 25-man squad.

Hence why, if Leoni stays at Anfield and trains with the club for the next three years, he’d become homegrown at the club.

Liverpool must move fast to secure their targets

Although there is still more than two weeks left of the transfer window, for the team to be fully integrated and ready to play with one another, Liverpool must get their new additions in as soon as possible.

Guehi, Leoni and Alexander Isak are the main targets on Slot’s shortlist at the moment, but for now, it’s unclear whether any of the deals are close to completion.

However, over the last few days, the Reds have stepped up their interest in Leoni and Guehi, which bodes well for getting a deal over the line.

Of course, only time will tell what the future has in store, but for now, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen.

But the fact that Parma’s manager has already described Leoni as a “great” player means that the Reds are on the cusp of signing a gem.
