Arne Slot has a decision to make this season, with Liverpool having two very good goalkeepers at their disposal in Alisson and Giorgio Mamardashvili.

Liverpool have been in dreamland all transfer window, so a lot of fans have seemingly forgotten about the prospect of Giorgi Mamardashvili, with the Georgian linking up at Anfield this season after becoming Arne Slot’s first signing almost a year ago.

He’ll battle for the number one spot with Alisson, but the Brazilian is expected to be the preferred choice between the sticks heading into the new season.

That may have been cemented by how both Liverpool’s new goalkeeping coach and Arne Slot still view the 32-year-old.

What does Liverpool goalkeeping coach Javi Valero think of Alisson?

Valero is back at Liverpool as a new goalkeeping coach, after a 15-year hiatus at the club, and in an interview with club media, he called Alisson the best shot-stopper in the world.

“Alisson is the best goalkeeper in the world and he has been at that level for years, so for all of us here it’s our job, our responsibility, to keep the standards really high,” he noted.

“From my side, it’s my responsibility to keep the standards high in the goalkeeping position and we are lucky as a club to have the best goalkeeper in the world with us.

“So, that’s a responsibility, but I have been lucky enough to be exposed to these kind of challenges in the past and the target this season is to keep the high standards that have been set by the club for many years.

Valero also hailed Mamardashvili as one of Europe’s best for his age, and is massively excited about the prospect of working with him.

That said, he can’t overlook the ‘world’s best’ in Alisson, which Slot would agree with.

What does Arne Slot think of Alisson?

Slot also hailed Alisson as the best goalkeeper in the world back in March, after the Liverpool shot-stopper produced a masterclass to beat PSG.

“I have had some very good players as a manager but never the best goalkeeper in the world until now,” said Slot.

“He showed that he is the best in the world today. To go away with a win here was probably a bit more than we deserved.”

The pair are in full agreement, and the likelihood is that when Liverpool face Crystal Palace on August 10th, it will be the veteran Brazilian walking out onto the pitch, with the Georgian on the bench.
