Liverpool striker Diogo Jota has tragically passed away in a car crash.

The Portugal international was with his brother when the accident happened as their tyre reportedly got a puncture and the car caught fire.

While initial reports were unconfirmed, Liverpool have since put out a statement regarding the situation.

Jamie Carragher has also paid tribute to Jota, and now, UEFA have confirmed that they will be doing the same.

UEFA confirm Diogo Jota tribute

The news of Jota’s passing hit like a train, especially since he only got married five days ago.

Seeing as though the 2025-26 season doesn’t properly start until the Reds face Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup on 10 August, the Reds won’t be able to win anything in his name until then.

Different organisations are likely to hold their own tributes, however, with UEFA now confirming what they’re set to do.

“On behalf of the European football community, we are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward, along with his brother Andre Silva,” they wrote via their X account.

“Our thoughts are with their family, friends, teammates and all those affected by this heartbreaking loss.

“A moment of silence will be observed at all of today’s and tomorrow’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 matches in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva who tragically passed away today.”

Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool’s number 20

The fact that Jota was only 28 years old makes this tragedy even harder to fathom.

While he may have been in the prime years of his football career, his life was only just getting started.

His brother, Andre Silva, was also only 25 years old, which is what makes this entire situation so much more gut-wrenching.

Both players were far too young to pass away, especially with what was ahead for them.

Rest in peace, Diogo, you’ll forever be Liverpool’s number 20.
