Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car crash in Spain.

Jota was travelling with his brother, Andre Silva, when their car reportedly caught fire after attempting to overtake another vehicle.

The news has shaken the whole footballing world, with fans of all clubs coming together to pay tribute to the 28-year-old.

For Liverpool supporters, the pain will cut especially deep. After a summer of such celebration, it is the most sobering reminder of just how short life is.

As the tributes have poured in for Liverpool’s eternal No. 20, former Reds centre-back Jamie Carragher has sent his condolences.

Jamie Carragher pays tribute to Diogo Jota

The news that Jota has passed away will have hit like a gut-punch for every single football fan on Thursday.

28 is far too young for anyone to die. For a footballer in the peak of his powers, it feels especially cruel.

Jota leaves behind his wife, Rute Cardoso as well as three young children. For them, the world will never be the same again.

And, rightfully so, that is who Carragher was thinking of as he posted a touching tribute to Jota on X.

“Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning,” wrote the Liverpool legend.

“Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids.”

Ian Rush reacts to Diogo Jota passing

Carragher was not the only Liverpool icon to have been shaken to the core by the news of Jota passing away.

All-time top scorer Ian Rush also gave his reaction the tragedy, sending his own message of support to Jota’s family and friends.

“I’m deeply saddened and shocked by the heartbreaking news of the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva,” says Rush.

“My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, children, and everyone in his family, as well as his friends and supporters.”
