‘Big question mark’ hanging over Federico Chiesa as he angles for Liverpool exit

Federico Chiesa’s case is a bit of a strange one, as the Italy international was brought in for pennies but was given hardly any playing time at Liverpool.

Most fans expected the attacker to be one of the bargains of the season, but instead, Arne Slot hardly gave him any time on the pitch, with Mohamed Salah taking up the right wing for most of the season.

Since Chiesa is only 27 years old, he still has plenty of life left in him to prove his worth to a team.

And, although he’s said that he’d be happy to stay at Liverpool, Chiesa has also admitted that he’d like to be playing more games.

Napoli have been the most strongly-linked team with the attacker but there are still some questions about whether he has what it takes to lead Antonio Conte’s side to another Serie A title.

Former Serie A star believes that signing Federico Chiesa would be a ‘big gamble’ for Napoli

As mentioned, a fair few teams have been linked with an interest in Chiesa, with Napoli the most interested in acquiring his services.

Conte’s men lost Kvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window and weren’t able to replace him.

With the entirety of the summer transfer window now ahead of them, they have plenty of time to weigh up their options and make a decision on who would be the best fit for their club.

However, while speaking on TMW Radio via All Nigeria Soccer, former Serie A star Nicola Amoruso gave his verdict on Chiesa’s potential move to Napoli.

“Lookman, I am for players who have already been tested in Italy and are an absolute certainty,” he said.

“He skips past his man, scores, makes assists, he would make the difference for Napoli too, and I think Conte knows that too.

“I see Chiesa as a big question mark, he would be a big gamble, and Napoli needs more certainty.”

Liverpool should try to keep hold of Federico Chiesa this summer

Even though Liverpool are set for a summer of change, Chiesa is one of the few players who should be kept among Slot’s ranks.

The Italy international only cost the club around £12.5million to bring in last summer, so even if they choose to sell him next year, it’s highly unlikely that they’ll lose any money on him.

Other players such as Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz have both been linked with moves away from Liverpool this summer, with clubs now showing concrete interest in both of the South Americans.

And, seeing as though both Nunez and Diaz are worth far more than Chiesa at the moment, selling one or both of them makes much more sense, even if they did have more prolific seasons than the Italian.

The Reds will be spending an obscene amount of money on Florian Wirtz over the next couple of days, and if they want to sign a new striker to help boost their chances of retaining the Premier League title, some big sales will have to be made.

Indeed, Chiesa could flop again and fail to perform to the standards expected of him, but since he cost the club so little in the first place, it feels like it’s worth giving him at least one more season to prove his worth.
