Andy Robertson could join Atletico Madrid this summer, with Kieran Trippier’s time in Spain a possible inspiration for the left-back.
Despite Robertson criticising Atletico Madrid back in 2020, it appears as if the Scotsman has had a change of heart and now seems set on moving to Spain.
Atletico Madrid see Robertson as a priority this summer, and the left-back himself is keen on the move.
Players like Trippier have also made the switch to Spain, and Robertson could be inspired to do the same after hearing the Englishman’s Madrid verdict.

Andy Robertson could see Kieran Trippier’s Atletico Madrid success as inspiration
Robertson’s hopes for a new Liverpool deal were revealed back in May, but with no offer on the table, the 31-year-old may now be tempted to move on.
So when it comes to searching for a viable destination, Atletico could be the answer, according to Trippier.
When speaking on his time in Madrid, Trippier claimed Diego Simeone helped him become a better player by improving his defending – an aspect of Robertson’s game which has waned in recent times.
“When I went to Atlético Madrid, people were saying it was the wrong move for me, saying I wouldn’t make it past the halfway line,” Trippier told The Overlap in June 2024.
“Diego Simeone encouraged me to go forward as much as I could. He got me into some positions where I thought it was so simple.
“When I first went there, Simeone said, ‘I need to improve your defending’ – as blunt as that. I was a bit suspect [defending] in my last year at Tottenham, getting caught out, playing people on side, and it’s all about fine margins.
“I just wanted the season to end [at Tottenham], I felt like I was getting suffocated because I wasn’t performing.
“Simeone worked with me for so many hours, just me and him on the training pitch after training, showing me clips of other players. With Simeone, if you break his trust, that is it, you’re done.
“It is about being on time, respect for everybody else and on the pitch, you have to run. If you do not run for him, it doesn’t matter how much you are paid; you are gone. It is there for everyone to see, you have to run for him.

“He always used to put me up against players like Thomas Lemar or [Yannick] Carrasco, different types of wingers, where Carrasco is someone who will chop you, and Lemar is one of those who will just run in behind you.
“He was very clever in the players he would put me up against. I look back on it now, and I think he did it on purpose to see how I would cope. He also used to work with me on positioning, when to go forward, when not to go forward. He was intelligent, and I learned so much from him.”
Robertson could be used in Julian Alvarez deal
With Kostas Tsimikas likely to leave, Liverpool won’t want to lose Robertson as well this summer.
The Scotsman’s exit, however, could be key in potentially landing another key position for Arne Slot.
Atletico’s Julian Alvarez has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time now, and the Spanish club’s pursuit of Robertson could help kickstart a move for the striker.
| Stats 24/25 | Games | Goals | Assists |
| Julian Alvarez | 54 | 29 | 7 |
Simeone has warned off Liverpool’s Alvarez interest, but the Argentine boss may be more tempted if his left-back target were included in the deal.
