Andy Robertson made brutal Atletico Madrid claim back in 2020, now he’s ‘keen’ to join them

Andy Robertson could join Atletico Madrid this summer, and the Scotsman’s past quotes about the La Liga outfit have resurfaced.

Liverpool fans have been rocked by the news that Atletico Madrid reportedly want to sign Robertson this summer.

That report has since been followed by further news that the Reds defender is reportedly ‘keen’ on the move, with initial talks already having begun.

So, with Robertson’s heart seemingly set on Spain, it may come as a surprise that the Scotsman has heavily criticised his potential new employers in the past.

Andy Robertson’s past verdict on Atletico Madrid

Fellow Premier League stars Kieran Trippier and Matt Doherty have made the switch to Atletico in the past, with varying success.

Trippier, in particular, thrived in the Spanish capital, winning La Liga and ingraining himself into Atletico’s win-at-all-costs mentality.

It was, however, that same mentality that caused Robertson to heavily criticise the Spanish side back in 2020, after facing them in the Champions League.

Speaking after Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat in the last-16, the Scotsman claimed Diego Simeone’s side got under the skin of the Reds players.

“They celebrated as if they won the tie after the game so let’s see,” Robertson told TNT Sports.

“We have a couple of weeks and Premier League business to take care of. They are coming back to Anfield, we know our fans will be there, we know we will be there, it is up to them to be there.”

“They can start falling over and trying to get under our skin like they did,” the left-back added.

“I think we handled it well with them falling over quite easy, we got on with it.

“We put in a decent performance tonight but we know we can be better and luckily, we have a second leg to put it right.”

Atletico Madrid move could be perfect for Robertson

If Robertson can learn to love the Atletico way, he could end up enjoying success in sunny Spain.

With Milos Kerkez’s transfer to Liverpool almost complete, the Scotsman may likely have to play second fiddle at Anfield next season and could see more minutes under Simeone.

It’s fair to say that Robertson struggled last season in the Premier League, and the left-back could suit a slower-paced league like La Liga.

Whatever Robertson decides to do this summer, he will undoubtedly go down as a Liverpool legend either way.
