Why Liverpool must sell Darwin Nunez as new multi-million claim emerges

Darwin Nunez’s Liverpool future has been questioned for around a year or so now.

The striker is the Anfield outfit’s record signing, and while there has been the odd game here and there when he’s proved his worth, more often than not, he’s left a lot to be desired.

Many teams have been linked with an interest in Nunez, with Saudi Pro League clubs among the most likely to make a move.

And, as the summer transfer window is now open, the rumour mill has started to turn with Liverpool now having even more of an incentive to try and relieve themselves of the attacker before the start of the 2025-26 season.

Liverpool could save around £4.2m by selling Darwin Nunez this summer

As part of most deals in football these days, instalments and clauses are used to spread the money required for the deal as far as possible.

A lot of transfers have three or four instalments across a couple of years to help with the Premier League’s PSR rules, with Liverpool being one of the many teams to use these to get deals over the line.

As per a report from Portuguese newspaper A Bola, it seems like Liverpool could be in the money if they sell Nunez this summer as the striker is ‘one game away’ from earning Benfica another €5million (£4.2milliion).

This is because if Nunez is handed another start in the Premier League or Champions League, he’d have made 25 starts, which would activate one of the clauses in the deal.

A Bola add that Nunez has already earned Benfica €85million (£71.7million), but as he is ‘expected’ to exit Anfield this summer, the fee will likely stay at that price.

Darwin Nunez’s time at Liverpool has run its course

Nunez’s time at Liverpool has been a bit like Marmite; fans have either loved him or loathed him.

As mentioned, there have been times when he’s been one of Liverpool’s best players, which has sparked reactions from people such as Ally McCoist, who have called him “incredible.”

But then, he’d end up having a game where his final third form was non-existent.

This inconsistency, coupled with the form that players such as Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo found themselves in at Anfield this season, have meant that he’s not played as much as he’d have likely wanted to.

Next season, Nunez will have even more competition as Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong can both be used in attack if and when needed.

So, with this in mind, it feels like it makes sense to sell the Uruguayan to perhaps fund a new number nine, such as Alexander Isak, which is yet another position Arne Slot needs to strengthen.

Indeed, only time will tell what the future holds, but with Liverpool not wanting to get rid of Diaz, it’s hard to see where Nunez will fit into Slot’s plans next term.
